Set up PayPal for your store

How to get a PayPal account that can accept business payments, and what happens when you connect it here.

Applies to: Account - Payments

Which PayPal account should I use?

For selling online the recommended account type is a PayPal Business account. A personal account is built for sending money between individuals and can limit how you accept payments from customers.

If you are in the US and do not have a registered company, PayPal may let you register a business account as an individual or sole proprietor. Whether that option appears depends on your country, your details and PayPal's own rules, so do not assume it is available until you see it in their sign-up flow.

We never ask for - and never store - your PayPal password, SSN, ITIN or EIN, bank login details, or card credentials used for verification. All of it is entered on PayPal's own website, in PayPal's own pages.

PayPal decides final eligibility, verification requirements and any account limits. We cannot accelerate or guarantee that.

Basic setup steps

  1. 1Go to PayPal's official business sign-up page, starting from PayPal's own website or app rather than a link someone sent you.
  2. 2Create a new business account, or upgrade the PayPal account you already have.
  3. 3If you do not have a registered company, choose the individual or sole proprietor option when PayPal offers it during sign-up.
  4. 4Complete PayPal's verification steps. If information is requested there, enter it directly on PayPal - never here.
  5. 5Come back to this platform and open Account, then Payments, then Connect PayPal.

Step wording is deliberately generic: PayPal changes its screens and labels over time, so follow whatever your own account shows.

What your customers can pay with

Depending on your PayPal account, the checkout product in use, the customer's device, their country and their eligibility, customers may be able to pay with:

  • PayPal balance
  • Credit and debit cards
  • Venmo (US)
  • Pay Later
  • Apple Pay
  • Google Pay
  • Other methods PayPal supports

These are capabilities, not promises. Connecting PayPal does not switch all of them on: what appears at checkout depends on your merchant account and the customer's situation. Our checkout only shows methods genuinely available for the order and hides the rest.

How connecting works here

When you press Connect PayPal we store the minimum needed to route your money: provider name, an account reference, your payout email, a connection status and the methods your account can offer. That is the whole record.

  • You are sent to PayPal's own site to sign in and authorise. You never type your PayPal password, tax identifiers or bank details into our pages.
  • We then ask PayPal whether your account can actually receive payments for your store. Connected appears only when PayPal confirms it.
  • If PayPal has not finished reviewing your account, the screen shows Pending or Restricted instead of Connected - that is PayPal's answer, not ours.
  • If this platform has not been approved by PayPal for merchant onboarding yet, no store can be marked connected. The Payments screen says so and links here.
  • Disconnecting removes the reference and switches payments off for your store.

We never ask for - and never store - your PayPal password, SSN, ITIN or EIN, bank login details, or card credentials used for verification. All of it is entered on PayPal's own website, in PayPal's own pages.

Common questions

I already have a PayPal account. Can I use it?

Yes, as long as it can accept business payments. If it is a personal account, PayPal may ask you to upgrade it before you can take customer payments reliably.

I don't have an LLC. What should I do?

Start the PayPal business sign-up and see what it offers you. Where PayPal supports it, sole proprietor or individual business setups are available; where it does not, PayPal will tell you what it accepts in your country. We do not give tax or legal advice.

Why can't my customers see card payment?

Card payments depend on your account having that capability enabled, plus the customer's region and device. Our checkout only displays methods that are actually available, so if it is hidden, it is not available for that order.

Why is my PayPal account still under review?

PayPal runs its own verification, usually because of account type, volume or region. That is between you and PayPal; nothing here can bypass or accelerate it.

How do I reconnect PayPal?

Open Account, then Payments, and press Connect PayPal again. You will authorise on PayPal's own site, and the status updates once PayPal confirms your account can receive payments.
